Courthouse Number1: The present Nacogdoches County Courthouse Finished in 1960, the fifth courthouse is the one being used by county government today. The building was built behind the existing courthouse, thus the term the “old” and the “new” courthouse which people still say today. The “old”, or existing courthouse was built directly on the sidewalk of Main and North Street. With traffic getting more congested and traveling at a higher rate of speed, and with 21 and 59 being major highways, the “old” courthouse would eventually have had to be moved. By the early 2000’s, the building began to show wear and tear, and as the county grew, so did the number of county employees. They just outgrew the building.
The county began renovation of the building in 2003 by buying buildings adjacent to the courthouse. Some offices were moved to what is now called the “annex” while others moved to other buildings around the courthouse. The main courthouse began renovation inside and out in 2006 and was completed in 2007. The courtyard in front of the courthouse took on a whole new look while adding a Veterans Wall to honor all Nacogdoches County veterans.
